{"id":8,"date":"2025-11-07T09:43:23","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T17:43:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ussgrayback574.com\/grayback\/?page_id=8"},"modified":"2025-11-27T08:32:26","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T16:32:26","slug":"welcome","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ussgrayback574.com\/grayback\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 align=\"center\">A Brief History of the<br \/>\nUSS Grayback (SS\/SSG\/APSS\/LPSS-574)<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Construction of the USS Grayback (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USS_Grayback_(SSG-574)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SS-574<\/a>) was authorized in 1953.\u00a0 The keel was laid 1 July 1954 at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, California and launched 2 July 1954 (Sponsored by Mrs. <a href=\"https:\/\/usnamemorialhall.org\/index.php\/JOHN_A._MOORE,_CDR,_USN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">John J. Moore<\/span><\/a>, widow of the last CO of the first <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USS_Grayback_(SS-208)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grayback SS-208<\/a><\/span>) and commissioned 7 March 1958.<br \/>\nThe Grayback was initially designated as an attack diesel submarine but was converted into a guided missile submarine (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USS_Grayback_(SSG-574)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SSG-574<\/a><\/span>) capable of firing the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SSM-N-9_Regulus_II\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Regulus II<\/span><\/a> sea to surface missiles in 1958.\u00a0 The Grayback successfully launched the first successful, submarine launched, Regulus missile in September 1958. On 9 February 1959 Grayback departed Mare Island, CA for her permanent home base and arrived in Pearl Harbor, HI on 7 March 1959.\u00a0 The Regulus missile program ended in 1964 and the USS Grayback was withdrawn from active service.<br \/>\nA second conversion was authorized in 1967, and the conversion began at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard November 1967. The conversion was originally estimated at $15.2 million but actually was $30 million.\u00a0 She was re-classified from a SSG to LPSS 30 August 1968 (never officially designated APSS). During conversion her sail was extended 10 feet, auxiliary tanks #3 and #4 were added to the forward position of the engine room, the missile chambers were converted to carry 67 embarked troops and SEAL swimmer delivery vehicles (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SEAL_Delivery_Vehicle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SDV<\/a>), and a diver&#8217;s decompression chamber was constructed in the starboard hanger. By adding the auxiliary tanks to the engine room her length was extended 12 feet to an overall length of 334 feet.<br \/>\nThe Grayback was decommissioned for the second time on 15 January 1984 at Subic Bay Naval Station in the Republic of the Philippines.
